- Dorothea af Brandenburg (født ca. 1430 - november 1495) var en dansk dronning. Hun var datter af markgreve Johan af Brandenburg, (1406 - 1464), og Barbara af Sachsen, (ca. 1405 - 1465).
1445 blev hun gift med Christoffer af Bayern, konge af Danmark fra 1440. Ægteskabet, som var barnløst, varede kun i 2 ½ år idet Christoffer døde. Det danske Rigsråd skulle herefter dels finde en ny konge og dels finde en løsning med den unge enke. Rigsrådet valgte, i fællesskab med hertug Adolf af Slesvig-Holsten, at overdrage såvel krone som dronning til hertugens unge søstersøn, Christian af Oldenburg. Således blev Dorothea 26. oktober 1449 gift med Christian 1.
Dorotheas slægtninge havde fulgt processen med stor opmærksomhed, og vist interesse i et ægteskab med Kasimir 4. af Polen, der var ny på tronen og endnu ugift. Ved sit første ægteskab havde hun fået lovning på enkeunderhold, et såkaldt livgeding, og dette kunne have betydet en stor pengeerstatning for Rigsrådet.
I ægteskabet med Christian 1. blev født 5 børn:
Olaf og Knud, begge døde som små.
Hans, født 1455, som efterfulgte sin far og kendt som Hans af Danmark.
Margrete, født 1456. Hun bliver 1469 gift med Jakob 3. af Skotland.
Frederik, født 7. oktober 1471, senere kendt som Frederik 1.
Dronning Dorothea viste sig at være i besiddelse af en handlekraftig karakter. Hun var interesseret i ægtefællens regeringsanliggender, ligesom hun var dygtig til administration af sit livgeding som bl.a. omfattede Roskilde Len samt Ringsted Len. Ved udlån af penge til sin ægtefælle var hun efterhånden blevet ejer af store dele af Lolland, Falster, Slesvig og Holsten.
Efter faderens død var hun i arvestrid med sin farbroder i mange år – og da der opstod problemer med hendes livgeding beliggende i Sverige, henvendte hun sig til paven for at få lyst de pågældende stormænd, Karl Knutsson og Sten Sture, i band. Derved kom hun i et modsætningsforhold til de danske interesser i Kalmarunionen.
I 1481 døde Christian 1. og dronning Dorothea ønskede at begge sønner, Hans og Frederik, skulle tilgodeses og helst sådan at Frederik fik Hertugdømmerne. Dette ønske fik Hans reduceret således, at han skulle dele hertugdømmerne med sin yngre broder.
Dronning Dorothea grundlagde Køge Kloster hvor munke af franciskanerordenen, de såkaldte "Gråbrødre", etablerede sig. Denne munkeorden var hendes foretrukne. Hun havde allerede i 1477 antaget Birger Gunnersen som sin kansler, han var da ung teolog og delte dronningens interesse for denne munkeorden.
Hun foretog to rejser til Rom hvor hun besøgte kirker og klostre. Ved begge rejser henvendte hun sig til paven og fik udstedt buller mod de som krænkede hendes ejendom. Dronning Dorothea levede sine sidste år i Kalundborg hvor hun havde enkesæde, og døde her den 10. november 1495. Blev efterfølgende begravet i Roskilde Domkirke.

She was given Holstein as her fief, and in 1481, she made heryoungest son Frederik regent there. In 1488 she visited the Pope inRome. She is described as economical and energetic and she is believedto have exerted political influence.

Biography
