  The Twentieth Century Biographical Dictionary of Notable Americans; Volume IIV N NEW, John Calfant, editor, was born in Vernon, Ind., July 6, 1831; son of John B. and Maria [Chalfant] New, and a descendant of Jethro New. John graduated from Bethany College, VA in 1851. He studied law in the office of Gov. David Wallace at Indianapolis and was admitted to the bar in 1852. He was the Clerk of Maron county, Ind., in 1856 for two terms. He was appointed Quarter Master general of Indiana by Govenor Morton during the Civil War 1861-62. He was elected to the Indiana Senate in 1862 and resided in Indianapolis, Ind., where he engaged in banking; was financial secretary to Governor Morton. He purchased a large interest in the First Natinal Bank of Indiana where he served as cashier, Sec. and Treasurer. He was appointed U.S. Treasurer by President Grant during the period of reconstruction in 1875-1876. A member of the Republican national committee, and chairman of the Republican state committee, 1880 and 1884. He was appointed assistant Sec. of the Treasurer by President Arthur in 1882. He purchased the Indianapolis Journal in 1880 and guided the political forces of Indiana in the 1880's. When Harrison was elected, he went to England as U.S. Council General from 1889 to 1893. He retired from public life in 1893.
