- HISTORY:Sophronia Elizabeth Harrod Garriott is the 2nd great grandmother of Keith Kingman and the namesake of his grandmother. He writes, [see article in Harrod File] "Her life unfortunately was a short and not an altogether happy one. On August 30, 1862 in the middle of the Civil War she married William Washington Garriott from nearby Jackson County. She was still sixteen at the time. Her first child Sherman Duese Garriott was born on april 6, 1863 and died three days later. On Febrary 28, 1864 her only daughter Laura Alice Garriott was born. Laura is my Great Grandmother (died 29 Dec 1937 in Wheatfield, Jasper, IN). In the fall of that year her closest brother in age, William Jasper Harrod, was killed in the Battle of Atlanta. On December 29, her last child was born named Edwin Howard Garriott. On October 23, 1867 Sophronia's husband William died leaving her with two children ages 2 and 4. Sophronia was still only 21 years old. Less than four years later on April 6, 1871, on the anniversary of the birth of her first child, Sophronia herself died at the age of 25. Laura and Edwin were now orphans age 7 and 5. Less than 8 years later Edwin died at the age of 13 (3 Feb 1879, in Scott Co, IN). Sophronia is buried in the Harrod Cemetery in Scott County next to her two sons and near her parents.
- William Washington Garriott was born in Clark County, Indiana on May 8, 1840. His Great Grandfather Ambrose Garriott came from Virginia around 1800 and settled in Northern Kentucky in Garrard and Jefferson counties. By the early 1800s William's Grandfather, Jacob Garriott was living in Washington and Jackson counties, Indiana. William only lived to the age of 27 as he died on 23 Oct 1867. For a long time while it was obvious that William was the proper age to have served in the Civil War I had no information that actually [proved he] had served. Recently however, a distant Garriot relative informed me that he had served and had died while in service at Camp Morton in Indianapolis. He said that his daughter Laura, had petitioned the government for an orphan's pension but failed. He believed that he died of typhoid. Camp Morton was a presoner of war camp during the war. Wiliam died in 1867 however, two years after the war ended. Most soldiers were mustered out shortly after the war so I question that he died while still in service. A better theory is that his family believed that he caught whatever disease while in service and were deserving of a pension. However, the government felt that he died after mustering out and had no obligation. Maybe I will figure this out some day.
