OBITUARY: Hold Services for Last Civil War Soldier. Military funeral services were held Sunday afternoon from the Christina church in St. Augustine for Stephen J. Babbitt, 92, the last Civil war veteran of Union Township, Fulton county. The service was conducted by Rev. S. H. Zendt. A quartet composed of Ross Stephens, L. E. Cutler, M. J. Babbitt and W. W. Harnest sang "Heavenly Home" and "When They Ring the Golden Bells for You and Me." L. E. Cutler accompanied by Mrs. Lola Cummings sang "Some Day He Will Make It Plain to Me." @Pallbearers were members of the Francis Chatterton post American Legion, Avon, and guards were two Civil war veterans, William Vetrees, Bushnell, bunk mate of Mr. Babbitt during the war and E. P. Ferguson of Prairie City. Military rites were conducted by the American Legion at the Babbitt cemetery at St. Augustine where burial took place. @A large crowd of relatives and friends attended the services from Galesburg, Knoxville, Abingdo, Avon and Prairie City. Those attending from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Babbitt and children, Hubert, Clara, Doris and Darlene of Walnut, Ia; Miss Lulu Babbitt, Omaha, Neb; Mrs. Pearl Mateer, Osceola, Ia; Emery Callison and daughter, Winterset, Ia; Prof. Glen Harrod of Eureka and Mr. and Mrs. Lee Rose, Peoria. @Among others present were Mr. and Mrs. L. H> Babbitt, Galesburg; Mrs. Albert Poiset and family, Avon; Mrs. S. P. Clark and family of Cresbard, South Dakota; Mrs. and Mrs. Halleck Powell and family, Prairie City; Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Powell, Mr. and Mrs. Grover Hass of Greenbush; Mr. and Mrs. M. J> Babbitt, Mrs. and Mrs. Ben Cummings, Mrs. and Mrs. Carl Morgan, Mr. and Mrs. Orloff Babbitt and Mary, Mr. and Mrs. S. A Babbitt, daughters Margaret, Garnet and Jeanette, of Galesburg; Mrs. Horace Quinn, Miss Dorothy Quinn, Mrs. Morrison of Abingdon; Mrs. J. W. Williams of Mt. Vernon.
