- Mary Jane Crofts DeMille, age 83, of Rockville, Utah, passed away December 19, 2010, at the Kolob Care Center in St. George, Utah. She was born in Kanab, Utah on September 19, 1926, she was the daughter of sawmill operator John Edward "Ed" Crofts and Mary Jane Hoyt of Orderville, Utah. On May 31, 1944, she married Ardell Dwight DeMille, son of Hyrum and Geneva Dalton DeMille of Rockville, Utah, in the St. George LDS Temple.
Mary Jane excelled in school and was an important member of her high school track team. She was an avid reader with special interest in historical and literary works. As a youth, her summers were spent at her father's lumbermill (Crofts Lumber Company) along Swains Creek on Cedar Mountain.
Her life was one of service to her family, church and community. Although she was a full-time homemaker and mother of seven, she worked alongside her husband on the farm whenever her time and energy permitted. An active member of the LDS Church, she held many responsible positions in the Rockville and Springdale Wards.
Her nursing, teaching, gardening, food processing and camping skills; artistic abilities in sewing, quilting and painting; musical and singing talents; and compassionate service work blessed her family, neighbors, church and friends year after year. In addition to her church and family responsibilities, she served as secretary/treasurer of the Hall and Grafton irrigation Company for 26 years, from August 1981 to May 2007.
Mary Jane is survived by her children, Eileen (Peter) Nelson of St. George, UT, Ellen (Roy) Given of Henderson, NV, Linda Adams of San Diego, CA, Diane (Claire) Rinehart of Alvaton, KY, Marianne Stock of Hurricane, UT, Dwight (Judith) DeMille of Fryeburg, ME, and Kerry (Natalie) DeMille of La Verkin, UT; 27 grandchildren and 50 great-grandchildren; sister, Karma Criddle of Carmel, CA. She is preceded in death by her husband; brothers, Arlos, Alfred, Josiah, John, and Leo; and sisters, Lola, Eva, Leah and Ellen.
The family would like to express appreciation to Kolob Care and Zions Way Hospice for their loving care of Mary Jane.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 29, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. at the Spilsbury Mortuary Chapel, 110 S. Bluff St., St. George. Friends may call Tuesday, December 28, 2010, from 7:00-8:00 p.m. and also Wednesday, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. prior to services, both at the Mortuary. Interment will take place in the Rockville Cemetery [1]
