Notater Notes
Catherine's mother was a full blood Aboriginal and her father is believed to be an unnamed Scotsman, according to one of her daughters, Ethel Luxton (nee Harton). We have been unable to find a Birth Certificate and assume her birth was never recorded.It appears that she may have been born at West Wyalong in NSW.
Ethel claims her mother was taken from her mother and given to a family named CONNOLY to be raised. It is beleived the Connolly family owned a station in the Cobar district and had 1 daughter and 2 sons, Gus and Sylvester. (by Ken Smith) It has been establised that the Connolys also owned the Shearlegs Hotel.
She was educated at the "Thomas Blakely Finishing School for Young Ladies" in Cobar.
She met William at the Shearlegs Hotel about 50 Kms South of Cobar
At one stage Catherine owned a boarding house opposite the Westley Church, Cobalt Street. Broken Hill prior to the 1930's.
She lived in Reid Street Wilcannia in a small house owned by her daughter Ethel opposite what is now the Wilcannia Golf Club.
During this time in Wilcannia she worked as a housemaid and cook for the Catholic Priest, Father Ledland.
About the time of William's death she moved to Broken Hill and lived in a Granny Flat at Gordon and Mary's home in Wolfram Street. Catherine died in the Broken Hill hospital in 1952.
