Victor was a Sergeant Pilot (Service No 402169) in Royal Australian Air Force. Transferred on loan to RAF 1939. Flew Hawker Hurricane fighters in Battle of Britain.
A mystery exists here. I always knew him as Victor, and I recently met a man who had been a school friend of his who knew him by the same name, but the Office of Australian War Graves lists his christian names as Christian Conrad OSTENFELD. (I have confirmed that this is correct). Lived at Ashfield. Travelled around New Zealand just before World War Two. Joined RAAF at the commencement of World War 2 and was, soon after, transferred on loan to the RAF with the rank of Sergeant-Pilot. Died when his aircraft came down, aged 22, on 28th July, 1941. Buried in Pwllheli BoroughCemetary, locally known as Capel Deugorn Cemetary, in the Parish of Denio, Wales. Pwllheli is a seaside resort on Cardigan Bay on the main road 21 miles south-west of Caernarvon. His grave is in Section B, Row C, Grave No. 27. Nola and I visited this grave in March, 1998. Pwllheli cemetary is quite large but has a War Graves section in which are forty-two well kept Air Force graves of Australian, New Zealand, Canadian, South African, Rhodesian and English personel.
