He marched all the way to California and when the Battalion was discharged in California in the suimmer of 1847, Bro. Fairbanks, togther with many of his fellow-soldiers, made his way to the Great Salt Lake Valley where he joined a number of his relatives who had arrived that year from the East. In 1861 he returned to the States and located temporarily at Quincy, Illinois, where he married and raised a family of five children. Afterwards he moved to Kansas, where he is supposed to have died.
