- Norwood Oscar HARTLEY-NISSEN (son of Hans Johannes Trules NISSEN and Josephine ROLLINSON). Born 8 September 1909 Mosman, NSW. His father’s address is listed as Bray St, Mosman. His mother went to hospital two months after he was born and died when he was eight months old. On her death certificate he is named Oscar. At some stage of his life he was fostered by Miss Stella Gladstone Hartley who was a nurse. He took her surname as his own. She became matron of Liverpool State Hospital and Waterfall State Hospital and eventually retired to Vaucluse. (She was born in 1884 in Balmain, the daughter of Robert B Hartley and Elizabeth Helen Adam, who were married in Newcastle in 1864). Norwood was a member of the RAN Reserve between 1926 and 1928. He became a bank officer and was 2nd officer in the Bank of NSW working in Brewarrina when he enlisted in the army. One of his junior officers at the time was Mr J M Young who used to go fishing with him on the Barwon River. Following Dunkirk and the fall of France many Australians rushed to enlist and Norwood did so on 23 July 1940 joining the 2nd AIF. He was in the 2/13 Australian Infantry Battalion and served in the Middle East – including Tobruk and El Alamein. He left Australia on 1 September 1941 and returned on 27 February 1943, achieving the rank of Lance Sergeant. He was not well enough to serve in New Guinea so spent the rest of his time with the Watercraft Workshops in Brisbane. He was married on 30 August 1940 to Phyllis Elma DWYER nee READ, a divorcee. (Phyllis A Read married Michael S Dwyer in 1932 in Temora. She was a schoolteacher, born in Goulburn in 1911). Norwood is registered under both Hartley and Nissen at his marriage, which took place in St Stephen’s Church, Macquarie St, Sydney. He was discharged from the army on 1 November 1945 with the rank of acting sergeant. His family had moved to Kangaroo Point, Brisbane, in March 1944 to be near him and they returned to Sydney after the war. In 1949 they moved from Auburn to Vaucluse. After Phyllis died Norwood later married Elizabeth Mary INGREY. He served as both State and Federal secretary of the Rats of Tobruk Association, and worked as an archivist for the NSW Bowling Association. He was awarded the OAM on 26 January 1982 for welfare of ex-service personnel and the community. He had three sons from his first marriage, John, Robert, and Alan. His brothers and sisters were not aware of his existence. He died on 22 December 1996, late of Vaucluse, NSW. His death notice acknowledged him as patriarch of his family. His son John married Hao Dinh in 1981. Robert married Rhonda Lowe in Brisbane in 1967. He died suddenly some years ago.
